The State of California released the annual Smarter Balanced test scores on October 18, which showed that English language arts scores dropped slightly and math scores increased slightly from 2022, although both scores lagged behind pre-pandemic numbers. Science scores were also up slightly. Overall, 46.7 percent of students were at or above grade level for English language arts, and 34.6 percent met or exceeded the standard in math. In 2019, before the pandemic disrupted education, 51.1 percent met the reading standard and 39.7 percent did in math.

At Cayucos Elementary, scores are significantly higher than the State of California percentages and are at the highest level since 2015. Cayucos Elementary School is a TK-8 school with 180 students,  36% socioeconomically disadvantaged students and 5% English Learners. Superintendent Jen Gaviola, “Our partnership with our parents, strong teaching practices and excellent educational staff, paraeducators in every elementary class, small class sizes, and intervention supports contribute greatly to our student success.”  English Language Arts scores at Cayucos Elementary increased slightly from 2022 to 69.7% at or above grade level, with a similar increase in mathematics to 61.1% at or above grade level. In addition to the overall strong performance at Cayucos Elementary, a deeper dive into the data shows that most students made growth in one or both of the areas assessed.  The highest achieving class was fourth grade with 78% of students on or above grade level in English language arts and 91% of students on or above grade level in mathematics.  Other highlights include seventh-grade students' high achievement in mathematics, 71% on or above grade level, compared to the state performance of 33% on or above grade level.

The State of California also assesses the area of science in 5th, 8th, and 11th grade.
